Not necessarily a new rider but only 3 years experience and self-taught. My question is when I reach a certain lean angle, the bike abruptly stands up and straightens out and I have to lean again to make the turn. Is this something that happens to others or am I causing this subconsciously, maybe stiffening up and not realizing it?

Most likely something you’re causing subconsciously. Without seeing video, I’d have to guess – and that guess would be that you tighten up on the bars, causing a bit of countersteering to bring the bike back up.
